“The best way to learn how to write is to read.” — Stephen King, in On Writing*
This quote from Stephen King applies to any form of creation, not just writing.
Being a great consumer makes us better creators.
Here’s how to leverage this mindset as a TikTok creator.
#1 Create an account that is Dedicated to Your Niche
Make your business related TikTok focused solely on your niche. No distractions. No off topic content.
If you want a casual channel for your other interests, make a second one for that.
#2 Follow as many creators in your niche as possible.
This isn’t a “follow for follow” train (which is not something you want to do) but just a way to create a feed that keeps you in tune with your industry.
“We are all a mashup of what we let into our lives.” - Austin Kleon, Show Your Work
By following only the creators in your space (and as many as possible) you'll turn your for you page into a source of insight and education that will drive your business forward and not just distract you.
#3 Bookmark/favorite sounds, filters, and trends
I have a deep collection of different elements I can use in my content. Even if you aren’t ready to use it right now, save things that you can picture working for you.
I also keep various playlists of videos for different things.
- TikTok shop videos that work.
- Clever hooks to emulate
- Content style types to replicate
You get the idea.
#4 Leave Thoughtful comments
This shows TikTok you’re not a bot, and engagement on a popular comment can lead to followers and increased engagement on your profile.
#5 Go on Topically Relevant livestreams
Request up on shows that are taking guests. This is a great way to build your audience and brand as well as earn a little money while you do it if viewers send you gifts.
