It's 11pm. The flyer's done. You export it, admire it for a second, close the laptop feeling pretty good about yourself.
Three days later the boxes arrive from the printer and something's wrong. The blue you picked looks muddy, almost grey. There's a faint white sliver running along one edge where there definitely shouldn't be one. The heading font is close to what you chose, but not quite it, and now you can't unsee it.
You didn't design it badly. Screens and printers just don't speak the same language, and almost nobody teaches small business owners how to translate between them.
Colour is the first thing that goes wrong
Here's the bit most people never think about: your monitor makes colour with light. Red, green and blue pixels glow at different strengths and blend together, which is how a screen manages to show over 16 million possible colours. A printer does the opposite job entirely. It lays down cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink, and ink absorbs light rather than throwing it out. That process tops out at roughly 16,000 colours. A fraction of what you were looking at on screen.
That gap is where “why does my print look wrong” complaints usually start. Design in RGB, and the shift to CMYK for printing can pull colours in directions you didn't plan for, sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes bad enough to ruin the whole piece. Set the file to CMYK from the start of the job, not as an afterthought before export. And if a colour has to be exact every single time, on a logo especially, a Pantone reference or an actual printed proof will tell you more than your monitor ever will.
Resolution: the trap almost everyone falls into once
Screens count sharpness in pixels per inch. Print counts it in dots per inch. Different units, and treating them as interchangeable is how a photo that looked crisp on a laptop turns fuzzy and blocky the second it's blown up on paper.
300 DPI is still the safe number for flyers, cards, anything held close. Large format work, banners and signage viewed from a distance, can get away with less resolution because nobody's standing three feet from a bus-stop poster squinting at it. What doesn't work, ever, is grabbing a low-res image and scaling it up in your editing software to compensate. That only inflates the file size. The pixelation stays exactly where it was. Vector graphics sidestep the entire issue for logos and icons, since they scale to any size without losing a thing.
Nobody explains bleed until it's already ruined something
Say your design has colour or an image running right to the edge of the page. The file needs to extend a few millimetres past where the page actually gets trimmed, because cutting machines aren't perfectly precise. Skip that step and you get a thin, uneven white border around a design that was never supposed to have one.
Same logic in reverse for text and logos sitting too close to the edge. Trim shifts a couple of millimetres, and suddenly your logo's clipped. Give both margins room, and what comes back from the printer actually matches the file you approved.
Fonts have a habit of quietly swapping themselves out
Open a file on a different computer and sometimes the fonts just aren't there anymore. The system picks the closest match it can find, and honestly, it can look close enough at a glance. Then it's printed at full size and the spacing's wrong, or the letterforms just aren't the ones you spent an hour choosing.
Embedding or outlining your fonts before export fixes this. So does exporting to PDF instead of sending a native design file, because a properly built PDF locks the layout, the fonts and the colour mode in place. That's the actual reason PDF became the standard for anything headed to a printer, not just habit.
The step everyone skips when they're in a rush
A printed test copy, checked at full size before the whole batch runs, will catch colour shifts, missing bleed, swapped fonts and the typo you've read past four times without noticing. It's the cheapest insurance in this entire process. It's also the first thing that gets cut when a deadline's looming, which is exactly backwards.
Getting it right before the run, not after
None of this comes down to talent. It's the gap between how a screen displays something and how ink actually behaves on paper, and that gap trips up beginners and seasoned designers in equal measure. Set the file to CMYK early. Check resolution before falling in love with an image. Build in bleed. Lock fonts into a PDF. Ask for proof, always, even when there's no time for one.
